Cats in Garden Art part 1

This is the first in a series of cats in gardens portrayed by artist throughout the ages.
The garden cat above is "Gukjeong chumyo" (Autumn cat in a garden with chrysanthemum) painted by Byeon Sang-byeok. Thought to date from 1730.

There is something very intriguing about this cat's face. Why do you think he is smiling?

  1. Thanks so much for posting this! It led us to identify a print that my mother has had for years by a different Korean artist, Kim Du-ryang, the "Scratching Dog". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Du-ryang
(Similar style, which led to Korean "animal paintings" and poof! there it was! Ah, the magic of the Internet!)
