How to Stop a Cat from Digging in Houseplants

Do you have a cat who loves to dig in the soil around your houseplants?

These meme*, going around the Internet recently, shows two terrific ways to thwart those kitties that  love to dig in the dirt around your potted plants. Plus, you can recycle those old plastic forks and foam plates in a useful way!

If your indoor garden is getting dug up, you can also try a couple additional tactics. First, placing plants out of reach or inside a terrarium or cage. Second, give them their own special place where they are allowed to dig, like a pot of soil place inside a tub, which is a totally natural urge.

  1. The forks would be no deterrent for Itty Bitty Kitty (see November 6 posting Caged Gardens). He'd probably jump over them into the pot and knock it over, breaking the pot and spilling soil all over. If not, he'd get on his hind legs (this Maine coon is about 30" tall) and play with the forks and pull them out until he could get to the soil!!

    1. Agreed that a determine Maine Coon (like my Santino or your Itty Bitty) cannot be stopped from anything they set their minds to! I do think though that these solutions have value in deterring the merely curious or bored average kitty to move on to another activity.
