Our two love the garden and get up to all mischief in it. I'm going to have to re-design the planting to be a *lot* sturdier as they do like to chase around and climb things. Hopefully, young Olga will calm down soon  <

Mama Needs a Nap

Smudge Sticks

Mary Curcio & Jon Frandsen shared these photos of their adorable cat and said, "Smudge always likes to check in on us whenever we are in our Takoma Park, MD, garden and to remind us to take a break by demanding head pats and belly rubs. But what she likes best is trying out and picking the perfect spot to watch the world from (and to have her picture taken). When she is inside she enjoys surveying her outdoor domain (sometimes with her buddy Joplin), sitting in boxes, and loudly moving socks from one floor to another. "

Joyce Grigonis is a retired Landscape Architect in Southold, NY. She is also a self-described plant whisperer and plant geek.

Joyce shared this photo and wrote, "This is Clawson. He’s getting to be a senior citizen now, but still patrols the gardens and catches the occasional rodent. He’s too friendly and used go up to just about anyone. Been stolen from us a few times, but always made it back to us. I think he’s finally learned that not all humans are nice. He sticks around now."

Container Jungle Cat

These photos were shared by Hannah Ewart. She writes, "This is my cat Anastasia (Staci); she is 19 years old as of this spring, and still insists on her daily strolls outside. Her favorite outdoor activities, aside from perusing my small patio garden in pots and raised beds, are sampling several patches of grass for evaluation, checking over one neighbor's grill and the other one's lawn furniture, and just soaking in the fresh air breezes."
   "There's an assortment of small animals that visit our yard (robins, squirrels, rabbits), but while she keeps a close eye on them, she mostly leaves them to their own devices. The occasional stray dogs that wander by are another story though; they are not welcome, and she puts the run on them! We live in the small rural town of Wayland, MO."

Hairy Potter

Charlotte Ekker Wiggins, a beekeeper, author, and gardener, shared these photos of her cat. She wrote:

"This is James A Mess, a one year old tuxedo rescue in Rolla, Missouri, USA. He loves to spend his days outside on my garden deck where he periodically visits his favorite pot of catnip. It's a small miracle that plant has still survived!"

"After a day of romping, James A Mess likes to take a break in one of his garden deck planter pots. I tried planting petunias in this pot, but he removed them. Guess some planters are for napping!"

The Mixed-up Kitty with Mistaken Identity

 

Amanda Munro of Bethesda, MD, shared this photo. She said, "Molly, who is actually a boy (my husband wasn't so good at determining newborn kitten sex, lol), was the first born to my female cat, Rosie. He is the coolest, most resilient cat around: Born to two older dog brothers, then got out over New Year’s 2020 at only 10 months old, and was missing until April, when a neighborhood post asked if he belonged to anyone. He was a mile away and has been with us ever since, now good friends with his new 'little sister,' Great Dane Sandy. We sometimes wonder if he thinks he is a dog."

Charming the Chicks

Surprise Plant Cutting Roots Itself

This adorable garden cat was shared by Noelle Johnson AZ Plant Lady® on her Instagram feed. 

She wrote, "As my sister was checking out her new plantings, she got a surprise.🌸😸🌼 Any surprises in your gardens lately?"

She shared that his name is Scissors and he is over 10 years old. "He is mostly an outdoor cat and loves to rest in pots ;-)," said Noelle.

Defying Gravity

Mary Lai lives outside of Denver, Colorado, USA, in a townhouse with lots of balcony/deck spaces and container plantings. She wrote, "This is Niko. He is a one-year-old rescue cat. He is constantly in my potted plants and is fearless hanging out there over the balcony in the planter box. He also goes crazy over worm castings. He loves to put his face in it!"

Sunset Kitty part 2

I previously posted here about this kitty who was depicted in a painted by Michelle Bailey.

Much to my surprise, I ran across the real cat in person when on a neighborhood house and garden tour a few weeks ago! This is Belle. She is occupying the front window box - just as depicted in Michelle's art. No plants will ever grow in it, as long as Belle keeps bedding down there - but who needs flowers when you have such a photogenic kitty!

Potted Ashley

Chris Eirschele, a freelance writer in West Allis, Wisconsin, shared this photo and story:

"Ashley was found by firefighters after they put out the flames of an abandoned house in Milwaukee. Only her meowing let them discover her hidden under a pile of newspapers in a closet. The tips of her ears, her paws, and her tail were burned. She also had a thermal burn on her side. Eventually the Wisconsin Humane Society determined that part of her tail was too infected and had to be amputated. By the time we adopted her, Ashley's wounds were healed. Her stubby tail her badge of honor.

   "She fit right in with my second floor indoor garden and the two dogs and one cat already living with us. Ashley's past did not dissuade her from being inquisitive; she loved my big pots.

Ashley was always the adventurer, as we found when she moved with us from Milwaukee to Boston. There she lived a good life to the end where she crossed over. Ashley started out in a rough neighborhood, but in the end was loved among our gardens."

It's Miller Time

Kathy Stevens, who works at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, MD, said, "There were actually two cats in pots on either side of my friend’s front door. Of course, one left as soon as I got close, but this guy, Miller, stayed put. It’s a south-facing porch and there is often a cat sun bathing out there."

Little Wizard

She said, "My small wildlife garden attracts a lot of cats that aren't mine, it has bird feeders, a fish pond, catnip, and a heated box for strays in winter."

"Merlin is the sweet son of a stray 'garden cat' that we adopted, Curly Fry (pictured at right). She was very sick when I found her curled up in a box on the porch, she was skinny and suffered a respiratory infection that abscessed her throat causing her to lose part of her voice, and she had just miscarried. We didn't want to get her spayed until she was stronger, she didn't appear to go into heat, so the kittens were unexpected, but made her very happy and all were healthy. I named all of her kittens after plants, excluding Merlin... my cousin
instantly wanted him and has him now."  

"The pic below is of Merlin's sibling, Juniper.  She is very affectionate and energetic. All of Curly's litter are doing fine."

Snow in Fall

Pam Beck, a garden writer, lecturer, and photographer, shared these fun photos of her cat. He is one of 4 felines in her household.  

She wrote: His name is Yuki, which is Japanese for 'Charmed' or 'Lucky' as well as 'Snow,' perfect since we rescued him on a Friday the 13th from the middle of a bridge as a 4-week old, injured kitten. He is fully recovered and loves to follow us when we are in the garden. 

In the photo above, "The crape myrtle is 'Townhouse', one of the lovely cinnamon colored bark crape from the JC Raulston Arboretum. It is a white-flowered form. The bees seem to make the entire tree hum and the petals fall as summer snow. Love it. The green grass-like plant is the winter foliage of Hurricane lilies or red Spider lilies (Lycoris radiata)."

Flitting with Meeko

Jeanette Price Zipf, the Education Registrar and Visitor Experience Coordinator at Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware, shared these adorable pictures.

She said, "This is our sweet boy, Meeko, in our backyard. While this isn't quite a formal garden bed, he still walks among the beauties - Spring Beauties (Claytonia virginica), that is! Meeko is just over 10 years old. He and (we think) his brother, Shadow, were dumped in my sister's yard when they were very tiny kittens. My niece, Shelly, rescued them and kept them until they were weaned. Shadow came to live with us, and Meeko lived with Shelly. (Meeko was first named Bella because it was thought he was a girl.) Meeko was a wandering boy. Eventually he came to live with us and has been with us since August of 2010. EVERYONE loves Meeko. He is the friendliest cat. We live in a suburban development and he has friends on every street. One year at Halloween, three little girls came trick-or-treating as black and white cats and told us that they had dressed up like Meeko. He has also had his misfortune. In January of 2015, he was attacked in our front yard by a raccoon. That was the first time we needed to visit an animal hospital. He had a badly wounded back paw. Happily he recovered. His best quality - he follows his friends around like a puppy dog. He comes when called, mostly, and wants to be where ever we are. His worst quality is that he is the dumbest cat ever. He will sit in the middle of our street and expect cars to stop or go around him. Fortunately, so far, he is still alive. His story goes on. we love him dearly."
