Cofer's Cats: Oliver and Star

Here are two store cats that I met back in April during the Azalea Society of America conference in Athens, Georgia. They live at Cofer's Home & Garden (https://cofers.com/). I believe the female tabby is Star and the male orange is Oliver.

In the bottom picture, Oliver is inspecting my purchases there that day. I planted this trio of strawberries in a basket and have gotten berries -- but not had the chance to eat any! The birds or some other critters are getting to them right as they ripen. My two current kitties (Kimba and Fancy) are both indoor cats, so I'm hoping a neighborhood "Oliver" comes along to protect the berries soon...

He Willie Likes Plants!

Sue Hunter, owner of www.heartwoodnurseryinc.com, shared these photos of her cat. Sue was a recent guest on the GardenDC Podcast talking all about growing hollies. You can listen to it here.

Sue writes, "My white cat's name is Willie. He is 10 years old and was born here in a gathering basket in my laundry room. His ultimate domain is my greenhouse. He watches over all of my cuttings, plants, and me! He is so careful around the plants, walking gingerly between them, and keeps the other cats in line. Will is definitely the boss!

Little Miss Figgy

A few weeks ago, my garden club visited the Plants Alive! plant store. There, I met Figgy, the adorable (and adored) resident store cat. I asked the staff to share her story and  Amari Hemmings sent in these photos and wrote:

Meet Figgy, our lovable greenhouse cat and furry mascot of Plants Alive! Rescued from Animal Services Baltimore County by the kind-hearted Becky Sass-Crews, Figgy found her forever home amongst the lush foliage of our greenhouse. This whiskered wonder has since flourished in her new environment, charming everyone who enters our verdant sanctuary.

Figgy's days are filled with the sweet aroma of blossoms and the gentle rustle of leaves, providing her with the perfect playground for her curious spirit. An expert in plant navigation, she loves to explore every nook and cranny of the greenhouse, ensuring that no leaf goes unturned. Her favorite pastime, however, is bonding with our dedicated employees, who have come to treasure her delightful antics and friendly purrs.

Customers visiting our greenhouse are always thrilled to encounter Figgy, as she warmly greets them with a flick of her tail and an inquisitive gaze. As she rubs up against their legs and weaves through the foliage, Figgy never fails to bring a smile to their faces. She has become an integral part of our team and a beloved ambassador of our establishment.

Tippy Toes in the Bulb Boxes

Regular contributor Marie Mims Butler shared these photos and wrote, "Meet Tippy Toes. For 14 years she has been a sales cat at Norfolk County Feed and Seed in Portsmouth, VA. She lures customers in with her charm and willingness to be worshipped. Tubers, bulbs, seeds, plants, pots, and products mysteriously appear in the customer’s cart. Tippy Toes is a feline siren. She scoffs at our efforts to resist."

"In my Facebook post, Les Parks posted a picture of another Feed and Seed kitty (shown below) Gizmo has lost garden center privileges after trying to commute across 4 lanes of traffic to and from home. She is safely lounging at home, scoffing at those who work for such a pampered way of life."

SunBelievable Kitty

Suzette Nordstrom of Monrovia shared this photo from Sailer's Greenhouse in Shakopee, MN.

She wrote, “#HappyHalloween It is NOT bad luck to have a black cat love your plants! SunBelievable is a great annual, providing no TRICKS all TREATS for loads of summer color into the Fall.”

SunBelievable is a sunflower that "produces over 1,000 flowers in a single season, from spring until first frost."

Barney & Friends

This is Barney. I took these photos on a recent visit to the little plant nursery that he calls his home.

Melanie Ruckle,
Proprietor/ Grower, at Putnam Hill Nursery in Forest Hill, MD, writes: "Barney is a funny little cat. He meandered over from our neighbor’s house and took up residence before it was figured out that he already had a home! Our neighbor has many cats, so when it was discovered where Barney was, she just laughed and was glad to hear Barney had found a new home."
"At first, he lived in the greenhouses, but soon he made his way into the house. Barney is the first cat that has lived with me that hasn’t been much of a hunter. In fact, we believe his sole purpose is to inspire feelings of love and affection. He makes friends with just about everyone. He greets me every morning waiting for lots of pets and head bumps before heading out for a long series of naps in the garden. Barney is about 5 years old."

Everybody's Pickin' Up On That Feline Beat

Stacy Greenstreet of Greenstreet Gardens, shared this adorable garden center cat. We have a special place in our hearts for "working" garden cats.
Stacy writes, "Jasmine, aka  “Jazzy”  came to us in February 2019. We adopted her from the SPCA Barn Cat program, a fantastic organization that does amazing work in and around Anne Arundel County, MD, USA."
"Jazzy took to her new home with us quickly. She can be found in our greenhouse or the gift shop, but she prefers to be in the gift shop greeting customers and lounging around. We call her our 'Gift Shop Kitty' or 'Diva' in the best sense of the word."
"She has the sweetest personality and on occasion will kindly bring us an unwanted critter that may sneak its way inside. "
"Our customers have come to love her as well. We have people who make special trips just to see Jazzy. On a personal note, we feel that having a cat or any pet in and around a business, brings a sense of calm, community and connection. She is surely an ambassador of Greenstreet Gardens."

You might also recall that we featured two other Greenstreet garden cats, Rue and Patch, so be sure to click on their names here to read their stories and see their photos too.

And if you don't get that headline reference, I invite you to enjoy this soundtrack gem from Disney's The Aristocats here.

Kash is King

Who doesn't love shopping at a local independent garden center and finding a BONUS of a friendly feline resident who welcomes head scratches.

Megan Grimaldi of  Moore and Moore Garden Center in Nashville, TN, USA, shared these photos of Kash. She wrote, "Kash was found at the garden center as a kitten. The first few years of his life he mostly stayed in our offices -- away from customers. He has really come into his own over the last few years. Now 7 years old, he loves to show off and get pets from anyone he can. He is a bit of a ham and loves to race around the garden center."

You can follow them on social media at  "Moore and Moore Garden Center" on Facebook and @moore_moore_nashville on Instagram for future updates on the adventures of Kash.

The Real Cats of Juniper Level Botanic Garden

Tony Avent and Jasper
The black cat cartoons sprinkled throughout the Plant Delights catalog were what first caught my eye. Then, a visit to their nursery in North Carolina showed me these are definitely garden cat people!

I asked Tony Avent to share a few pictures of their garden cats and he sent these two of Jasper. He then said that you can see their other garden cats at:
https://www.plantdelights.com/pages/cats?fbclid=IwAR09yjXWFfSpvgOZuUUxZnshI7n4TOMxYpkOAPcdfQfOKsf6sKnCFW8gpPc
Be sure to visit the link to see the fun photos and bios, then go visit Plant Delight's Juniper Level Botanic Garden in person!

Jasper and plant tags
"Jasper loves people and loves to climb trees and to catch mice, birds, squirrels, frogs, lizards, and all other manner of creatures. He loves to chase butterflies, bees, and voles, too. He loves to hang out with Henry, but the feelings are not always mutual. Jasper is our most gregarious cat and if you call him by name he will come to you with his tail pointing straight up in the air...be sure to reward him with a belly rub or a butt scratch.  Likes: Following the staff around the garden to check in. Nursery Tour Groups. Dislikes: Nothing. It's all good."

Not-so-lazy Garfield

Ronnie Port, horticultural advisor at St Bridgets nurseries, in Newton St Cyres, Devon, United Kingdom, shared this photo on her LinkedIn profile.

She said, "This picture was taken by my friend and work colleague, Jess Gowing, of a cat that loves to visit us at work he walks over 1km just to say hi. Meet Garfield, I think her picture shows how epic he is and what a great photographer she is. He’s a lovely little cat with very loving owners. The regular customers we have also love looking out for him."

"He’s our favourite little pal that pays us very regular visits. His wage is being fussed and he follows me around quite a lot expecting a nudge from on top of compost bales, tree lines, gates, and occasionally from the till counter as a tip from customers."

A Spoonful of Sugar

Sugar is the resident garden cat at Trinidad Greenhouses & Floral in Trinidad, Colorado, USA. Sugar's photo was shared by store owner and florist Carol Bazanele.

Carol posted, "This is Sugar, our newest feline employee. I wasn’t going to get a cat after Chaos died, but I went to Noah’s Ark just looking. I’ve never had kitten will power, so I adopted this one. She’s very sweet and super friendly, and eats more than any cat I’ve ever had.
I wasn’t going to wax poetic about this stupid cat- but, I love her. She’s so sweet, however she’s a thief. She steals keys, pens, anything small. She stole my credit card yesterday. I left it on the table, and found it in her bed. She helps herself to the stuffed animals in front, so she can destroy them in mock battles. She’s a joy! Adopt a shelter pet!! You need some unconditional love in your life! "

Peatie the Cat

Peatie the Cat went missing from his home at Gale's Garden Center in Westlake, Ohio, and was thankfully found and returned six months later thanks to his microchip.

Peatie was a customer's cat, but kept wandering over to the store to lounge on the patio furniture and bask in attention, so the customer gave Peatie to the store about 10 years ago, where he made himself of use as a mouser.

Peatie quickly became a customer favorite. "They come in here, they ask for him by name. He's our local celebrity,” Kevin Mahoney, general manager, said.

Here is Peatie's full story:

Not-So-Bitter Rue

I saw Rue featured on Greenstreet Gardens social media channels and had to know more. Tim Williams, Manager of Greenstreet Gardens of Virginia, location on 1721 West Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA, shared this bio of Rue:
"Prior to the fanfare and notoriety she now enjoys, Rue was born sometime during June or July 2017 either to feral parents or later abandoned as a kitten. She was rescued by the Blue Collar Cat Program, organized by the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC, and was placed with Greenstreet Gardens in April 2018.

"Our story mirrored those of many who seek to adopt cats through the Blue Collar Cat program. Greenstreet Gardens, a full-service garden supply and plant store, was interested in getting a cat to help prevent mice from damaging products. Customers and employees regularly open the doors as most of our products are outside, and without any physical boundaries, it seemed clear that our environment might not be suitable to a cat used to living inside.
We reached out to Blue Collar Cats after being referred to them by several cat-loving individuals because Blue Collar Cats places street cats of varying degrees of socialization with businesses and individuals who need rodent control.

"Rue arrived at Greenstreet small (weighing a mere 6 lbs.) and very shy. She is still petite, but between her rodent dinners and the treats, regularly given her by employees, she has filled in and rounded out quite a bit. More importantly, as the months passed, she became increasingly comfortable with the people she saw every day. We all hoped she would eventually feel comfortable around customers, if not outrightly friendly. Not only has she become a popular member of the team here at the store,  she has managed to find her way to tolerate (as only a cat can), the pets that often accompany their humans to the store; and she recently even allowed a customer hold her.

"When the weather is nice, Rue spends most of the time wandering around the store property; you can often find her observing employees as they work. She is allowed to come and go anywhere she wishes and has learned that by simply sitting near a door she will soon have several customers and employees vying to be the one who opens the door for her to enter or exit. We initially were concerned she might wander too far or try to cross the busy streets that surround the property, but she has shown a remarkable understanding of the areas safe for her to explore. She will occasionally sit on the edge of the parking lot, but she has never ventured out to areas where cars could hit her.

"Like most cats, Rue knows what she wants and uses the people around her to get it. We have had to enforce a “no treats” policy because her appetite was voracious and she knew that begging for more not only earned her more treats, it also brought added attention and showers of compliments: “Oh, she’s so cute!”

"She still gets plenty of the modern comforts like air conditioning and fleece-lined, padded beds, where she often spends the hottest hours of the day curled up in a sunbeam; she’s also comfortable with being out in cold or damp weather – the one exception being thunderstorms when she seeks refuge in the store’s office underneath (and as far back as she can get) one of the desks. Her favorite seasons are Spring and Fall when the weather is cool and there are new areas to explore as the store’s inventory and design changes for the season: either stocking up on new plants or laying out straw and pumpkins.

"How did we come to name her Rue? We certainly didn’t lack for suggestions – employees at all the Greenstreet stores chimed in, as did customers. Early on we decided that her name would be that of some variety of plant and that it would also reflect her distinctive character.  After much deliberation the decision was made to name her after the herb Ruta graveolens, which aptly translates as “herb of grace.” Rue’s personality has also encouraged a variety of plant-related nicknames including Ruellia and Rutabaga. She has a very round face, so even the latter name is reasonably well-fitting.

"Rue had already become a popular and loved member of the community, but in spring 2019 she gained celebrity status when People Magazine ran a full-page story, which included her picture in their May 20 issue. Now. she finally has the popularity to go with her princess-like bearing and strut. In the months that followed she has also been photographed and ‘interviewed’ by Agence France-Presse and Scripps."
Cats in Gardens blog readers may recall that we featured Rue's "cousin" Patch, adopted by GreenStreet Gardens in Lothian, MD, in this post.
